The Conversationalist – An Online Platform Designed to Empower and Educate Gen Z Individuals to Break Open Their Echo Chambers Through Difficult Conversations
Today’s youth is growing up amid social unrest, deep political division, and social media’s toxic landscape. The narrative that young people don’t have a voice in tackling these issues is changing thanks to “The Conversationalist,” a nonpartisan platform that seeks to educate Gen Z individuals on breaking open their echo chambers and having difficult conversations through POVz, the first Gen Z talk show.
Members of Generation Z are the first ‘digital natives’ because of their native use of technology. While their online presence might allow Gen Z to explore causes that matter, too many individuals remain stuck in their echo chambers online, which means they’re only encountering opinions and beliefs that coincide with their own. The story of Gen Z is that of a digital generation struggling to cope with isolation, polarization, and a lack of resources for good in its mission to break open echo chambers.
Sophie discovered that 66 percent of Gen Z individuals are interested in connecting with someone who thinks differently from them under a shared social cause. In comparison, 78 percent seek daily conversations about diverse social issues. In her opinion, Gen Z are the leaders of today, not tomorrow, and will be the driving force behind real and tangible social change because of their willingness to engage with perspectives outside of their own.
With this in mind, The Conversationalist is standing boldly in its point of view that every voice deserves to be heard, and having conversations that break open echo chambers leads to a more unified world. To further its mission to facilitate echo chamber-breaking conversations, the platform just launched “POVz,” the first ever weekly Gen Z talk show that tackles controversial topics from multiple perspectives. Hosted by Sophie Beren and featuring five passionate Gen Z’ers with opposing views on the topic at hand, POVz fosters dialogue that empowers each guest to stand firm in their beliefs and share their unfiltered, controversial opinions without fear of judgment. Season 1 of POVz will launch on Tuesday, September 7, and will cover timely, controversial questions such as, Should abortion be legal? Does white privilege exist? Is climate change really the end of the world as we know it?
With the launch of POVz, The Conversationalist equips its audience with tools to have effective conversations and to recognize one another’s shared humanity. Sophie reminds the community to “put as much effort into hearing someone else’s perspective as you would want someone else to put into hearing your own.” The platform aims to break open one million echo chambers by 2025. With her passion and mission at the forefront, Sophie has taken The Conversationalist from an idea inspired by her upbringing in Wichita, Kansas, where she often felt like she didn’t have a voice, to a Gen Z Talk Show featured on a billboard in Times Square.
