Art – solace, an escape. Everyone’s life comes with struggles and art helps everybody forget their troubles. While some can find peace in just consuming the art, souls like Roodmy Poulard immerse their lives in art.
Roodmy Poulard the founder of Poulard Films has worked on independent film projects and also with streaming giants like Netflix, Pandora, Revolt, and HBO.
Poulard, hails from Haiti, he spent his childhood in a small village. Speaking of his days in Haiti, Poulard recounts, “My life now and my life then are poles apart. I do have a nostalgic fondness for my childhood, but I also remember the struggles we faced. Having a roof over our heads, and food on our plates was more than enough for us. Electricity, and water were scarce. You can imagine the conditions, but I found my way by sticking to my art and I’m grateful for that.”.
Poulard has made his Haitian heritage an intrinsic part of his films. The distinct colour palette you’ll see in his work – the warm shades of golden and yellow are a call back to warm days under the Haitian sun.
Poulard started as a choreographer and made the jump to being a director and started working on music videos. His next big step as director was a documentary. He was offered to film a documentary for the-then Haitian Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe. Following the success of this documentary, Poulard was invited to film another documentary, in South Africa.
Having made his mark and proven to the world that he was a force to be reckoned with, Poulard moved to the US.
In 2015, he was living in New York City and making headway as a director and cinematographer. There Poulard worked with B.E.T and the renowned photographer and director Marc Baptiste – who became his mentor.
It was in his time with Baptiste when Poulard did a project with Quincy Brown. Brown recognised the potential Poulard had, and encouraged him to pursue his ambitions further, and to move to Los Angeles.
Poulard did end up moving to Los Angeles. Initially he came to California for a couple of weeks to attend meetings. But being in LA changed his mind – the rich history and culture of the city awed him and he decided that this was the place he needed to be in. Here,
Since moving to the city of angels, Poulard has greatly expanded his portfolio. Poulard has worked closely with Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs – Revolt TV’s founder- as a key cinematographer; landed projects with big streaming houses and also started his own firm.
Roodmy Poulard has accomplished a lot as an artist, and a lot more is on the way.
