Reintroducing The Hakone Special Edition For The 2025 Toyota GR86 Update
Toyota introduced the Hakone Edition, a limited-edition 86 for the US market in 2020, which was inspired by the well-known Hakone Turnpike in Japan. Reintroduced for the 2025 model year, this special model is based on the revised GR86 that was initially revealed for the Japanese market.
With the 2020 model and the new Hakone Edition, Toyota is sticking to the same formula. It will be based on the GR86 Premium grade and is finished in Ridge Green. A prominent ducktail spoiler out back is standard, as are a pair of sleek 18-inch satin bronze wheels. It also sports a Hakone emblem and a lot of black embellishments.
The GR Ridge Green Limited model, which was just introduced in Japan, is the same as the 2025 GR86 Hakone Edition. With a limited production run of 200 pieces, the JDM model has the same eye-catching external finish. The U.S. variant is expected to be slightly more accessible, with 860 units expected to be produced.
New sports seats with tan leather upholstery and Ultrasuede upholstery are found inside. Additionally, Toyota installed a GR special edition plaque and a new gear knob. Sachs dampers and updated Brembo brakes with the required red calipers finish the improvements.
And the other members of the GR86 clan?
Toyota has also revised the remainder of the GR86 line for the 2025 model year, just as it has done in Japan. New shock absorbers designed to enhance handling are the first step toward improvements. For manual-equipped vehicles, the throttle mapping has also been updated to make blipping easier than before, and engine torque control is included to enhance throttle response and linearity. The electric power steering has also undergone modifications, giving it a more dynamic feel.
The 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, which produces 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) of torque, is still the source of power. It can be paired with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Standard equipment on both models is a Torsen limited-slip differential. While manual vehicles have a Track option to sharpen things up a bit, automatic models also get a new Sport mode to enhance shifting.
Later this year, Toyota will reveal the 2025 GR86’s US MSRP, which will include the Hakone Special Edition.
