BOSTON – Trevor Story hit a Grand Slam on the Green Monster – and in the hands of a former Red Sox player – after Boston hit the Seattle Mariners 7-3 one night after hitting three homers on the left field wall of Fenway Park. Friday night.
The story, linked to Robbie Ray’s (4-4) thigh-high 1-2 slider, led Boston to a 4-0 lead in the first inning in the third inning. Former Red Sox outfielder Johnny Gomez, a member of Boston’s 2013 World Series Champions, sat on top of Monster. He took a few steps to his right and grabbed Story’s slam on his body, hi-fiveing his neighbor with a big smile. He also wore a shirt during the celebration.
Story did not know that Gomez caught him until the end of the game.
“I saw a clip of it and I saw Gomez,” said Story. “I thought it was nice, man. It’s something special. I will never forget that. ”
Originally, during the game, when the Associated Press interviewed Monster, Gomez said he would keep it.
“I’m going to sign Trevor and take him home,” said Gomes, 41, placing the ball on a tabletop in front of him.
But then he chatted with Story and the couple came up with an idea.
“I just signed him for me,” Story said. “My first Grand Slam as the Red Sox, it was very special to me. It was a really cool moment. I made him sign on the other side. ”
Gomez knew he wanted it, but he changed his mind.
“I think he was going to put it first,” Story said. “I said, ‘I think it would be nice if you could sign it, and I kept it because it was the first.'”
After the game was over, Gomez went inside and put the ball in the story locker.
In the first game of Thursday’s four-match series, Boston’s victory went three times deeper, with the Story receiving four hits and seven runs scored.
“Obviously, Trevor’s story is very much in the news,” said Mariners manager Scott Survey. “He has started his season. Unfortunately, that happened in the last few days.
Jackie Bradley Jr. added a three-run shot for the Red Sox, who won for the seventh time in 10 games after losing the season-high five-game series.
Austin Davis (1-1) relieved starter Michael Vacha with five on and two outs in the fifth, giving JP Crawford a flurry before working on an exact sixth for victory.
Restored from a 15-day injury list before the game, Wacha dropped two runs and four hits in 4 2/3 innings, three walks with three strikeouts. He was on the side due to pain in the left side.
Read about Gomez’s capture, “I didn’t expect to see him on the stand. “I saw him in the dugout in the pregame. You feel like you go to the ballpark every day and you see something you have never seen before. That’s exactly what happened today. “
Abraham Toro hit a two-run homer for the Mariners, striking out four of five.
