OpenAI Expands ChatGPT App for macOS and Updates Canvas

OpenAI revealed a number of enhancements to its Canvas function. An early beta version of the sandbox-style pop-up window, which enables users to work along with the chatbot on inline modifications, formatting, and code, was made available to all users in October 2024. In order to make the ChatGPT software for macOS available to all user tiers, OpenAI has now integrated support for the o1 AI model.

OpenAI Enhances the Canvas Feature in ChatGPT

The o1 AI model was formerly offered to premium members for general output production; however, Canvas did not support the reasoning-focused model. Users who have purchased ChatGPT Plus, Teams, or Pro plans will now be able to use Canvas with the o1 model.

The initial step in using the o1 model with Canvas is for users to choose the AI model from the model picker. The sandbox interface with o1 capabilities can then be accessed by means of the toolbox icon or the “/canvas” command.

Additionally, the ChatGPT desktop version for macOS now offers Canvas. In addition to all the subscription tiers, Canvas is accessible to free users. Nevertheless, the O1 model will not be accessible to free users. Interestingly, the feature was previously limited to the platform’s web edition.

Furthermore, support for HTML and React code is being added to Canvas’ capability. As an addition to the current support for JavaScript, TypeScript, Python, Java, C++, or PHP, the tool will be able to display these coding languages. Currently, only paying subscribers have access to HTML and React support.

Additionally, OpenAI disclosed that in the coming weeks, Enterprise and Edu members will have access to HTML and React rendering in addition to support for the O1 model.

Interestingly, Canvas is a collaborative sandbox interface that allows AI and human users to collaborate on projects. Once ChatGPT has produced an output in response to a prompt, the user can take control and refine the response inline. According to OpenAI, the functionality is appropriate for jobs involving coding and creative writing.
