Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro plans are bold, but the company’s refusal to make any meaningful changes to the standard models of the iPhone 14 has come as a real shock. And it got worse …
After an eye-opening report in February that both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max lacked Apple’s 120Hz promotion display technology, the most accurate information in the industry has now doubled.
Apple YouTuber EverythingApplePro (aka Filip Koroy) has further explored the new iPhone 14 design. Koroy obtained the schematics of the iPhone 14 Pro models and printed them in 3D, admitting that “at first glance it does not look so much changed” but on closer inspection they reveal that the earpiece has been placed at a higher position in the phone.
“Another amazing change I didn’t notice at first but later I couldn’t see is the increased angle radius along the thin bezel which is getting 21% thinner. You will have more screen but less bezel and more pleasing round shape. Is moving in the right direction. “
Koroi warns that these changes don’t add much screen estate, but they do take the iPhone lineup in a whole new direction. Koroy also adds that the schematics of the new dual hole punch on Pro models, including the standard iPhone 14 and the new iPhone 14 Max, “fully confirm”. For iPhone 14 Pro buyers, 2022 looks like an exciting upgrade year, but those considering the standard iPhone 14 might have to wait until 2023 when big changes are coming.
05/10 Update: The next iPhone display plans are now revealed and they come directly from Apple. Today, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office officially granted Apple a patent for the next-generation in-display fingerprint reader for tablets and smartphones.
The patent itself describes the use of optical fiber behind the display, which can capture fingerprint data at a higher rate and with greater accuracy than anything you’ve seen before. Furthermore, with reports that Apple only tested the iPhone 13 with an in-display reader before mass production, there is a lot of speculation that the iPhone 14 will eventually bring this epidemic-friendly authentication method back to iPhones in addition to Face. ID.
Needless to say, this patent reflects Apple’s continued interest in the technology that was controversially removed from premium iPhones with the iPhone X in 2017. When the company thinks it can, it just fits Apple’s philosophy of adding features and functionality. Class-leading method. Clearly, something is happening here.
“My personal opinion is that we will have to wait a little longer,” he said. Improved Face ID recognition for mask wearers distributed in iOS 15.4 eases epidemic pressures, and to mitigate the risk, Apple is often reluctant to add major new features in the years leading up to changes in iPhone design – which is happening on Pro models in 2022. Dual biometrics is the future (touching your display while looking at your phone brings military-level security) so I hope I’m wrong, but beware of sources claiming this technology is perfect for the iPhone 14 lineup.
In an effort to correct the misreporting, Ross Young, CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), tweeted that “only pro models” would play promotions. And given Young’s remarkable track record, it looks like the ultimate nail in the coffin of technology that has become popular and ubiquitous in mid-to-high-end Android smartphones in recent years.
And my feeling is that Apple has put itself in a corner here. This year, Apple is determined to widen the gap between its Pro and non-Pro iPhones, and it can’t do that when it comes to standard iPhone models with a feature called ‘ProMotion’. This is despite the fact that Pro in 2022 is nothing special about ProMotion. This is a rare example of Apple’s marketing jargon coming back to bite the company and it can’t come at a bad time.
Under another name, Promotion would have been a simple and popular upgrade for iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max. High refresh rates bring a level of screen smoothness and responsiveness that is not possible with a 60Hz display, as well as reducing eye strain. Apple itself markets ProMotion as a “game changer display”.
But other than that, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max have almost nothing left to recommend. In an unprecedented move, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will re-use the design, display tech, camera modules and chipsets in the iPhone 13. All major upgrades for iPhone Pro models are being saved.
