His career has already included ventures in Stargate, Conan the Barbarian, Game of Thrones, DC Comics, Dune and The Fast and the Furious — and now Jason Momoa is adding another major franchise to his already impressive resume: Minecraft.
Jared Hayes, director of Mojang Studios and Napoleon Dynamite, is currently affiliated with Direct. Ankler first broke the news which was later confirmed by several traders.
Of course, this isn’t the first time I’ve heard of a movement on a Minecraft movie. The news first surfaced almost 10 years ago, with Free Guy director Shawn Levy first joining, followed by Philadelphia star Rob McAlney’s It’s Always Sunny, and most recently, Peter Solet, director of Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. But now, it’s Hess and Momoa – and we don’t know how it might look.
Momoa, of course, can turn off practically anything. He first appeared in the hit show Baywatch and did some successful TV shows, including a long run on Stargate: Atlantis, before playing the role of Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones. He was then cast as Aquaman for the Justice League by Zac Snyder (a character who is still strong, aquaman sequel to debut next year), starred in this year’s award-winning hit dune, and was recently cast. As the new villain in the upcoming 10th Fast and Furious. He’s also on Apple TV + Show C, and occasionally shorter, character-based movies like The Bad Batch (not one) and Netflix’s Sweet Girl.
That being said, although it is almost impossible to portray Momoa in the world of Minecraft, especially from the person who made Napoleon Dynamite, it could work. It usually works for him. Then again, we’re sure Levy and McKelney and Solet all might have thought they’d get a hit game franchise off the ground.
