Wish is Disney’s newest animated film, delving into the origins of one of the studio’s most iconic characters – the magical wishing star.
Just kidding – kinda. The film definitely draws inspiration from the whole “wish on a star” motif that crosses many films. It takes place in a kingdom where a young heroine named Asha wishes on a star for guidance. And lo and behold, just like Neil Gaiman’s Stardust, a star (named Star) crashes down into the kingdom of Rosas to help hope.
Wishes will come true in a new style that combines watercolor elements with 3D animation. It will be a musical with songs by Julia Michaels. Asha is voiced by Anita DeBose, who played Anita in 2021’s West Side Story, while Disney veteran Alan Tudyk – known for animal sidekicks like Moana’s Hei-Hei and Raya and Last Dragon’s Tuk Tuk – will continue her legacy. Like a goat named Valentino. And apparently, there will be plenty of Disney Easter eggs in the movie, if that’s your thing.
The film will be directed by Frozen director Chris Buck and Raya and The Last Dragon story artist von Wiersunthorn. Wish is slated to release in November 2023.
