DeepMind wants to enable Neural Networks to emulate algorithms to get the best of both worlds and is using Google Maps as a testbed.
Classical algorithms are those that enable software to eat the world, but the data they work with does not always reflect the real world. In-depth learning powers some of today’s most prestigious AI applications, but in-depth learning models require retraining to apply to domains for which they were not originally designed.
DeepMind is trying to combine in-depth learning and algorithms, creating an algorithm to rule them all out: an in-depth learning model that can learn how to simulate any algorithm, creating an algorithm-equivalent model that can work with real-world data.
Deepmind has made headlines for some of the most iconic feats in AI. After developing Alfago, an event that became a world champion in the Go game in a five-game match after defeating a professional human game player, and Alphafold, Deepmind has set its sights on another grand challenge in 50 years of biology: deep learning with classical computer science, AI techniques.
Charles Blundell and Petar Velikovich both hold senior research positions at Deepmind. They share a background in classical computer science and a passion for applied innovation. When Veličković met Blundell at DeepMind, a line of research, called Neural Algorithmic Reasoning (NAR), was born, following the pair’s recently published Homonos position paper.
The main thesis is that algorithms have fundamentally different qualities in deep learning methods – as described by Blandell and Velikovich in detail in their introduction to NAR. This suggests that if in-depth learning methods are more capable of mimicking algorithms, generalization of the class seen with algorithms will be possible with in-depth learning.
Like all sound research, NAR has a genealogy that goes back to the roots of the areas it touches and becomes a branch in collaboration with other researchers. Unlike most foot-in-the-sky research, NAR has some preliminary results and applications to show.
We recently sat down with VILIčković and Blundell to discuss the first principles and foundations of NAR, as well as MILA researcher Andrea Dick, who elaborated on the details, applications and future directions. Areas of interest include processing graph-sized data and finding ways.
Finding a way: There is an algorithm for that
Dick learned in Deepmind and became interested in graph representation learning through the lens of drug discovery. Graph Representation Learning is a field that Veličković is a leading expert on, and he believes it is a great tool for processing graph-sized data.
“If you lean hard enough, any kind of data graph can fit into a presentation. Images can be viewed as graphs of closely linked pixels. Text can be viewed as a sequence of connected objects. In general, things that really come from nature that are in a frame They are not engineered to fit, they are actually shown naturally as graph structures, ”Velikovic said.
Another real-world problem that makes graphs better on their own आणि and a standard problem for Deepmind, which is part of the same alphabet as Google आहे is finding a way. In 2020, Google Maps became the most downloaded map and navigation app in the United States, and millions of people use it every day. One of its killer features, Pathfinding, is not supported by anyone other than Deepmind.
The popular app now shows an approach that could revolutionize AI and software as the world recognizes them. Google Maps is a real-world road network that helps you estimate travel times. Veličković noted that DeepMind has also worked on a Google Maps application that applies a graph network to predict travel times. It is now querying in Google Maps around the world, and details are provided in a recent publication.
