‘Coco 2’ will see Disney and Pixar return to the Land of the Dead. During the company’s annual shareholder meeting, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed the sequel. In 2029, the sequel, which is now in the early stages of development, will be released in theaters.
“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure, and we can’t wait to share more soon,” Iger said.
Members of the original film’s creative team, including co-director Adrian Molina and director Lee Unkrichn, will return for the sequel. Inside Out 2 and Toy Story 4 will be produced by Mark Nielsen.
The original 2017 movie was a critical and financial success, earning two Oscars and making over $800 million worldwide. The narrative centers on 12-year-old Miguel, who, in spite of his family’s long-standing prohibition against music, aspires to play the guitar. He travels to the Land of the Dead on the Mexican holiday of Dia de Los Muertos in order to learn the truth about his forefathers.
“Remember Me,” a song composed by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, won two Academy Awards for best animated picture and best original song, respectively, in Coco. In addition, the movie took home the BAFTA for best animated film, the Golden Globe for best motion picture animation, and the Critics’ Choice Awards for best song and best animated feature.
