The Chimei Museum in Tainan is set to present an exhibition named “Masterpieces from the National Gallery, London” in May. This is the museum’s first collaboration with the British National Gallery in London and include pieces by over fifty internationally recognized painters.
52 pieces by artists including Dutch painters Rembrandt and Vincent van Gogh, as well as Italian painter Raphael, will be on show during the exhibition, which runs from May 2 to September 1, according to the Chimei Museum.
Since its founding in 1824, the British National Gallery in London, home to one of the largest collections of paintings worldwide, has never before loaned any of its artwork to a Taiwanese institution, according to the museum.
It further stated that more than 2,300 pieces from the 13th to the 20th centuries will be on show, including pieces by Paul Cezanne, Caravaggio, and Sandro Botticelli.
It added that the exhibition, which took place in Shanghai, Seoul, and Hong Kong last year, attracted record numbers of visitors.
It stated that around 400,000 individuals saw the Shanghai expo.
According to the museum, Chimei Museum is the only organization in Taiwan with which the gallery wished to work on its global tour.
The pieces will be brought back to London in time for the gallery’s 200th anniversary following the Tainan show.
The director of the Chimei Museum, Hsu Chia-chang, stated that while the exhibition was difficult to put together, the museum views itself as a significant art platform that aims to give Taiwanese people access to global cultural resources and offers visitors a novel viewpoint on a variety of artwork.
