Keith Richards reunited with X-Pensive Winos at the Beacon Theater in New York on Thursday night for the benefit of Love Rocks, one of his only performances since the end of his 1993 American tour. The event raised money for God’s Love We Deliver and also featured the presence of Mavis Staples, Hozier, Warren Haynes, Melissa Etheridge and Jackson Brown.
Richards and Vinos were introduced by Lawrence Fishburn. He talks about his love for the blues and how the Rolling Stones introduced him to Maddie Waters, Chuck Berry, Little Walter and John Lee Hooker. He said, “It really connected me to something. “It’s blues music, it’s really everyone’s music. Everyone gets blues, man. Everyone. There are many people in the world who suffer. We’re going to start that. “
They began setting out with the group’s 1992 LP Main Offender “999”, which will be re-released later this month as a deluxe package. He followed her with “You Got the Silver” from the 1969 Stones LP Let It Bleed and “Before They Make Me Run”. Check out the pro-shot footage of the set here.
The band consisted of guitarist Waddy Wachtel, drummer Steve Jordan and keyboardist Evan Neville. Venus bassist Charlie Dryton is currently Bob Dylan’s drummer and he played a tantrum in Irving, Texas, so Will Lee handled his bass part. Richards called him an “honorary vino” for the evening.
Vinos joined Richards in 1987 to support his solo debut Talk Is Chep. After the release of the main offender, they toured in 1988 and again in 1992. His show focuses on the Vinos Original and Stones songs that were originally sung by Richards, although he also performed “Gim Shelter”.
When the Stones ramped up for the Voodoo Lounge in 1994, Richards set Venus aside. He remained close to the members, and Jordan was brought to the Rolling Stones in place of the late Charlie Watts last year.
Although they played “Happy” and “Gim Shelter” at the Apollo Theater’s Great Night in Harlem Benefit in 2015, Love Rocks was billed as their first performance in 30 years. However, this was his first time playing the original Venus song since 2015. 1993.
