“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” a Disney and 20th Century production, made $40.6 million in its second weekend of release, once again ruling the foreign box office.
The fourth installment of the “Apes” reboot series has made $237 million worldwide and $136 million abroad thus far. After “Kung Fu Panda 4” ($533 million), “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($561 million), and “Dune: Part Two” ($710 million), it is presently the fourth-highest grossing film of the year.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” must continue to fare well at the box office in order to justify its $160 million production cost. Making money throughout its theatrical run will depend mostly on sales of tickets overseas. Leading international markets are Mexico ($12 million), France ($13.8 million), China ($20.4 million), and the United Kingdom ($10 million).
“IF,” a fantasy-comedy directed by John Krasinski and distributed by Paramount, came in a distant second with $20 million from 58 markets. The film is geared toward young children. With $35 million at the American box office, the movie debuted at the top and has since made $59 million worldwide. Even if the original PG family movie cost $110 million to produce and many more millions to sell, those profits are respectable. Thus, “IF” needs to have a successful theatrical run and generate positive word-of-mouth.
“IF,” which centers on Brooklyn neighbors Cal and Bea (played by Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming) who have the power to see other people’s imaginary acquaintances, was written, directed, produced, and starred by Krasinski. The star-studded voice cast of IFs is completed by Steve Carell, Matt Damon, Maya Rudolph, Emily Blunt, Bradley Cooper, Jon Stewart, and George Clooney; however, their voices will probably be dubbed for international markets. To date, the United Kingdom ($3.2 million), Mexico ($2.8 million), and Australia ($2 million) have been the top earning nations abroad.
In other news, Sony’s “The Garfield Movie” increased its worldwide total to $49 million with an additional $10.2 million from 27 regions. It debuted over the weekend to $1.9 million in Mexico and $1.3 million in South Korea.
