India’s Organic Revolution: A Booming Market with Global Potential

New Delhi, India – August 2024: India is fast becoming a global leader in the organic sector, thanks to a growing awareness and preference for sustainable and eco-friendly practices. With the organic food market reaching approximately USD 494.80 million in 2023-24, the country’s agricultural diversity and innovation are setting new standards in organic farming and production.

The Rise of Organic Agriculture in India

India’s journey towards organic farming is rooted in its rich agricultural heritage and diverse ecosystems. The Indian government has implemented several initiatives to support this transition, such as the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) and the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for the Northeastern Region (MOVCDNER). These programs provide end-to-end support to organic farmers, from production and certification to post-harvest management and marketing.

Shri Sunil Barthwal, Commerce Secretary, highlighted the importance of these initiatives during the inauguration of BIOFACH India 2024. “The allocation of funds for 100 new labs dedicated to quality checking and food safety will help Indian organic products meet global standards,” he stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to boosting the organic sector.

Market Dynamics and Consumer Trends

The Indian organic market is driven by several factors, including rising health consciousness, urbanization, and increasing disposable incomes. Post-COVID, the share of online platforms in organic sales has surged from less than 10% to nearly 25%, with major e-commerce players like Amazon and Flipkart introducing dedicated “Organic Stores.” This shift reflects a broader trend towards convenience and technological advancement in food shopping.

The growing demand for organic products is not just limited to food. The beauty and wellness sectors are also experiencing a surge in organic and natural product lines, catering to a market increasingly concerned with sustainable and health-conscious choices.

The government’s recent efforts to negotiate mutual recognition agreements (MRA) on organics with key countries aim to facilitate smoother export processes for Indian organic products.

A comprehensive report by APEDA, in partnership with CRISIL unveiled at BIOFACH India 2024, offers insights into the Indian organic agriculture scenario, market trends, and export dynamics, along with strategies for overcoming obstacles in the value chain.

Abhishek Dev, Chairman, Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) stated “Indian organic products hold immense potential to capture a larger share of the international market owing to India’s vast agricultural diversity, growing consumer demand for organic food products coupled with growing awareness about health. We aim to educate and raise awareness about the benefits of these practices, not only for our health but also for the environment and our local communities.”

BIOFACH INDIA: A Catalyst for Growth

While the focus remains on the broader organic market, BIOFACH India, India’s most focused organic trade fair since 2009, serves as a significant platform for industry stakeholders to explore and engage with the sector’s potential. Organized by NuernbergMesse India and APEDA, the event brings together international and national players to showcase innovations, network, and discuss future trends.

Sonia Prashar, Managing Director and Chairperson of the Board, NürnbergMesse India, remarked, “BIOFACH India has played a considerable role in bringing the Indian organic market onto a global platform. The event promotes the development of regional markets and showcases the incredible potential of organic agriculture in India.”

The Way Forward

India’s organic sector holds immense promise for the future. With a combination of government support, growing consumer demand, and innovative practices, the country is well-positioned to expand its footprint in the global organic market. Initiatives like the National Cooperative Organics Ltd (NCOL) and National Cooperative Export Limited (NCEL) aim to support organic farmers by aggregating products and enhancing their market reach under the “Bharat Organic Brand.”

As India continues to evolve as a key player in organic agriculture, the focus will remain on sustainable practices that benefit health, the environment, and local communities. The organic revolution in India is not just a trend but a testament to the country’s commitment to a greener and healthier future.
