Google Pixel Fold 2 Leaks: Extended Display, Hinge, and Rear Camera
According to recently released photos of an early prototype of Google’s upcoming foldable, the Pixel Fold 2 appears to be entering the ranks of the “prominent camera bump” group, after leaked mockups of the Pixel 9 series.
Some of the initial information about Google’s second foldable phone started to surface earlier this week. According to reports, the Tensor G4 chip, which will be combined with up to 16 GB of RAM—a first for Pixel phones—will be used in the Pixel Fold 2 instead of a new processing generation.
Take a first look at what is most likely going to be the Pixel Fold 2 this year in a new report from Android Authority. The redesigned camera bump, which replaces the Pixel Fold’s bar with a rounded rectangle that extends from the top-left corner, is the most striking feature on show. The design bears a striking resemblance to the camera array that was first revealed in Pixel 9 series leaks.
The collection of camera sensors on the Pixel Fold 2 appears to be mostly unchanged from the first-generation foldable, just reconfigured. It’s also important to note that Google’s second Fold still lacks the temperature sensor from the Pixel 8 Pro, which is expected to be included in the Pixel 9 Pro.
Among foldables, the original Pixel Fold was distinct due to its compact and extremely wide form factor. Google appears to be taking a completely different approach with the sequel, adopting a new, considerably taller aspect ratio that bears a striking resemblance to the OnePlus Open. According to a source for Android Authority, it’s “closer to a square.”
Another modification that is instantly apparent is the hinge, which now resembles the one used by OnePlus almost exactly, based on what is visible in this photograph. However, Google’s form factor has a lot of rounded edges, whereas Samsung and OnePlus have both concentrated on creating more squared-off designs.
Since this gadget is reportedly still in the development stage, not every apparent element may be taken for granted. Nevertheless, the matte materials that Google chose for the Pixel Fold 2 hinge—as opposed to the polished metal of the original Fold—help to conceal the hinge when the phone is unfurled.
Many anticipate the Pixel Fold 2, which may be presented at Google I/O 2024, to launch in the summer, following the pattern set by the Pixel Fold introduction last year. Meanwhile, the Pixel Fold 2 might be included in this fall’s Made by Google lineup, based on the rumored usage of a Tensor G4 CPU and design cues found in the Pixel 9 series.
